Human rights are rights every single human being is entitled to, simply because he or she is a human being. This means that the realisation of these rights is important for everyone.

To work for the protection of human rights is possible in several ways. Academic research with regard to the theoretical background of human rights is one of these ways; practical action for the application of human rights is another. The Human Rights Office combines the two, with the effect that theory and practice will strengthen each other.

All kinds of human rights organisations that engage in practical activities may make use of the results of the research of the Human Rights Office to support their activities. For other institutions, including governmental institutions, the results of this research may be relevant as well, for instance as a basis for new policy measures.

The Human Rights Office also publishes reports and organises conferences for all who are interested in human rights issues, whether or not as part of their profession.

Research conducted by the Human Rights Office is essentially legal research. However, whenever relevant philosophical and other aspects will also be taken into account. The Human Rights Office has an independent status.

One of the possibilities is to ask for advice on legal arguments in support of practical activities. The Office can also support in the preparation of human rights cases for review by international human rights bodies. The Human Rights Office gives special attention to the problem of discrimination (in particular on the grounds of race or nationality), refugees, and the protection of social rights like the right to work or the right to health care.
